The long narrow rooms of this family home were transformed, allowing for a more contemporary lifestyle, while taking into consideration the classic Victorian style of the building. The hierarchy and uses of the spaces were successfully and elegantly transformed, making the rooms more defined and suitable for their desired use.
Brief:
The client wished to increase the use of the ground floor, and generally make the rooms more spacious and inviting.
Process:
The staircase was shifted and opened up to create an interior balcony between the ground and lower ground floors, and creating a double-height space, opening up communication between the two floors. The staircase functioned as a sculptural element on the lower ground floor. A special feature stairwell continued the downwards movement functioning as an elegant cylinder shaped wine-cellar. The lower ground floor was expanded towards the back to include a cinema and theatre.
The kitchen and family room were opened up, introducing a breakfast bar, wine bar and dining area. The ground floor was opened up to allow for light and view over the back garden, creating a comfortable spacious open-plan living space. The typical Victorian narrow and dark entrance hall was transformed by opening the hallway at the front and shifting the walls, creating a light and spacious foyer. This classic Victorian Town House had the typical long and narrow spaces.
