Smart Solutions for Spatial Planning
Country: UK, Project Type: Urban design
Smart Solutions for Spatial Planning (SSSP) is a decision making and design support system for Urban planning. The project is developed in collaboration between 4M Group, Center for Evolutionary Computing in Architecture (CECA) and the London borough councils of Tower Hamlets and Newham.
The aim is to provide tools for the building of sustainable communities. Users of the SSSP systems would be able to rapidly visualise multiple practical scenarios, potentially opening up the design process to input from all affected parties. By automating many of the simpler tasks and ensuring basic set requirements are met, the flexibility, speed and accessibility of urban planning processes has been drastically improved.
The main responsibility of 4M Group has been the writing of a Visual Basic programme. The programme applies evolutionary optimisation techniques to create a block massing algorithm. This is used to develop valid 3D massing solutions for the project, which would satisfy the planning requirements agreed upon by the SSSP project and the project managers. Factors that feed into the system are the local spatial policies, detailed case study of the area and the known site-constraints and requirements. |
