Evolving Urban Structures using Computer Optimisation Techniques

Developed as an MSc thesis in conjunction with 4M Group and Aedas, this multi-objective optimisation and genetic algorithm was created, with a view to investigating site layout problems.

Genetic algorithms have been successfully employed in the investigation of urban site layout; as they are capable of incorporating both topological and topographical consideration of the site plan.

The genetic algorithm searches a vast theoretical database of solutions, evolving its results towards the most pragmatic solution as defined by the requirements of the project. Oftentimes, to detangle the discrepancies by optimising different positioning and usage points for each individual site.
